Special Service Package (SSP) Ford Mustangs were pretty hot with law enforcement agencies from 1982-1993, and then Ford stopped offering them when they redesigned the Mustang for 1994. In recent years we’ve been seeing law enforcement agencies using Ford Mustangs for patrolling highways again. And with 486 horsepower and the ability to go from 0-60 in 4-seconds, who needs a police package?
The North Carolina State Highway Patrol used SSP Ford Mustangs from 1990-1993, and they’re spreading the word that they recently purchased (25) 2024 Ford Mustang GT’s to start patrolling their highways again:
We’d like to officially welcome to the SHP fleet, the 2024 Ford Mustang!
Twenty-five of these marked vehicles will be making their debut in the coming months on interstates across North Carolina. History and traditions are an important part of our Patrol Family and the use of Mustangs have their beginnings on the SHP in the 80’s and early 90’s.
The cost of these new vehicles is comparable to other vehicles currently deployed as part of the Patrol’s fleet, and the new addition will help to broaden the equipment and resources made available to troopers to effectively keep our roadways safe.

The decision to purchase Ford Mustang GT’s has raised many eyebrows as these sport cars are a far cry from the traditional patrol cars. But as I said, this isn’t anything new for North Carolina. This is actually part of their heritage.
The units acquired by the Highway Patrol are equipped with the optional GT Performance package, which includes high-performance Brembo brakes, an upgraded suspension, Torsen differential, additional chassis reinforcement, a tuned exhaust, and front tow hooks. They are also presumed to have the 10-speed automatic transmission, ensuring optimal performance in all conditions.
Citizens can expect to see these impressive Fords in action, ensuring that law and order are maintained at all times.
