In December we showed you the Florida Highway Patrol 1986 SSP Ford Mustang. Here’s a look at 1991 SSP Ford Mustang used by the Florida Highway Patrol. From 1983-1993, The Florida Highway Patrol used a total of 1,663 Ford Mustangs.
This Mustang was in service from 1991 until 1996 and was then decommissioned and sold at auction for $5,000 with 78,000 miles on the odometer. Normally all of the highway patrol markings are removed before these vehicles went to auction. That new owner put 30,000 more miles on it and eventually stored it for about 20-years.
This Mustang still gets down the road with the original 5.0L V8, T5 manual transmission, 3.08 gears, and original stainless exhaust.
On the inside you’ll find an MPH K55 RADAR, Code 3 siren, Wig-Wag headlight switch/relay, Motorola radio, and CB radio. This is where I have a problem when featuring these vehicles. While this equipment was available during this time period, it wasn’t the equipment that was typically used in these vehicles. To see what equipment was used, check out ‘Restoration Guide – Florida Highway Patrol SSP Mustangs‘. Still though, I appreciate the owners desire to keep the equipment period correct.
On the outside, these cars were equipped with Federal Signal Jetsonic lightbars (shown), a Unity spotlight, and trunk mounted antennas for the radios. Some of these cars had strobe lights mounted on the rear package tray (rear deck), and it you look at the photos, you can see holes in the package tray suggesting that this car was equipped with strobe lights in the rear window.
It’s been a long time since these cars were retired, but they’re still out there. If you find an SSP Mustang for sale look at it closely. It may have had a career with the Florida Highway Patrol.
