Since 2022 the Georgia State Patrol has been patrol the highways with Chevy Camaro’s. The GSP has had a long history of using unique vehicles for patrol including the Chevy Camaro’s, Ford Mustangs, and Dodge Challengers.
The vehicles being used for patrols went through a series of modifications before being used for patrols. They received a rear seat delete, a roll bar was installed, as well as interior mounted blue emergency lights, a siren, a radio, printer, and computer docking station and stand. The vehicles also have a rifle mount/lock.
The main purpose of the new cars will be to respond to street racing and “super speeders”, those unlucky souls who find their heavy right foot leading them way over the posted speed limit. The State of Georgia defines a super speeder as anyone traveling 75 mph or more on a two-lane road or 85 mph or more on any road or highway in Georgia, including highways. In addition to any fees and punishments assessed by the Court, a super speeder must pay an extra $200 fee to the state.
I really like the sign that lights up in the windshield and on the push bumper that lets people know that the State Patrol is behind them when they look in the rear-view mirror. And if they’re stupid enough to think they can flee, that push bumper will make them wish they hadn’t.
The sooner you can catch up to speeders and reckless drivers, the sooner you can end the pursuit. The zero to 120 or 100 mph is way faster than the Dodge Charger, so that makes catching up to vehicles easier. They may also make some people think twice when they realize that the vehicle pursuing them is as fast if not faster than they are.
It wasn’t just the Troopers that received the Camaro’s either. There are some commercial motor vehicle officers out there with them as well.
These Chevy Camaro’s are my favorite Georgia State Patrol cars since the Chevy Caprices.
Now we just need a video of one chasing a black Pontiac Trans Am.
