Introduction

There are a few different flashers that you may come into contact with when working with vintage Code 3 PSE lightbars or headlight flashers.

Code 3 PSE 360 Flashers

The Code 3 360 flashers are an electromechanical alternating flasher used for emergency vehicle lighting. They are mounted using a single bolt that passes through the center of the housing. Here are the different versions of the 360 relays:

  • Model 360RS can handle 2 loads of 5 amps each at 55 watts (used with a single pair of stationary lights)
  • Model 360RDK can handle 4 loads of up to 5 amps each at 55 watts, and can steady burn 2 of the 4 loads
  • Model 360HL can handle 2 loads of up to 5 amps each, and can be used on headlights
  • Model HDFLSH is the heavy-duty car flasher, not to be used for headlights
  • Model 339 can handle 2 loads of 28 watts each only (no warranty on this item)

NOTE: The diodes on the 360RDK that allows steady power to be applied to two of the flashing lights without travelling back to and shorting out the relay.

Code 3 PSE 700 Flashers

The Code 3 Model 700/710/711 Alternating Flashers uses an electronic timing circuit to control two specially designed flasher relays. The unit is totally weather resistant and may mounted anywhere on the vehicle away from heat sources and direct water splashes, using either the mounting tabs at each end or the
mounting hole through the device. Outputs 1 and 2 are capable of handling up to 100 watts (8 amps.) each. Model 700/710/711 flashers can be used as a Headlight Flasher or as a lightbar flasher.

Here are the differences:

  • Model 700 is an alternating wig wag, that can handle two 100 watt loads of 8 amps each
  • Model 710 is a double-flash alternating wig wag that that then flashes both lights, and repeats. It can handle two 100 watt loads of 8 amps each
  • Model 711 is an alternating wig wag that then double flashes both lights and repeats. It can handle two 100 watt loads of up to 8 amps each

NOTE: The 700 flashers have three connections running along the edge (above). The 710 and 711 flashers have four connections run along the edge that are on the opposite side of the module.

The Model 700, 710, and 711 flashers have a label with the wiring diagram on the back side of them.

These two videos show the difference between the Model 710 and Model 711 flashers. The Model 711 basically does the opposite of the Model 710. The Model 700 and 360 Model relays are standard alternating flasher relays.
